It was in 2004 that Dr Basil returned to university to complete a Master of Science in Dentistry (by Research) at the University of Western Australia. He graduated in 2007 after writing a thesis titled, An in vitro investigation into the antimicrobial activity of some endodontic medicaments and their base using agar diffusion, biofilm testing and medicament inactivation by dentine.
During the study, he was supervised by Professor Paul Abbott (UWA) and Professor Laurence Walsh (UQ), who he would later work with to invent endodontic products that would help improve the outcomes in root canal therapy.
In 2008, Dr Basil completed additional orthodontic training and continues to do further orthodontic training today.
Dr Basil was diagnosed with sleep disordered breathing and he completed several courses in this field from 2013 onwards and now screens his patients for this disorder and guides them to seek the best treatment possible.
The importance of a functioning airway and its link to facial development, cognitive development and sleep is well documented. This is especially important in growing children so Dr Basil will examine tonsils, presence of a blocked nose/mouth breathing, constricted upper jaw and other signs.
He will request X-rays and scans and refer his patients to Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists to ensure breathing without difficulty and to enhance overall health and well-being.
