Dr Basil is located in Annerley and has his patient’s best interests at heart. Basil was born in Brisbane, a local all of his life. Dr Basil graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Dental Science in 1987, before beginning his first job as a Dentist at the Brisbane Dental Hospital in 1988. In 1991, he moved to the Mitchelton Dental Centre, where he stayed for two years. He started his practice in Annerley in May 1994 and he will celebrate 23 years of his own practice and 30 years of being a Dentist in 2017. Since starting in Annerley in 1994, Dr Basil has treated over 10,000 patients.

A highly-experienced Dentist, but Dr Basil is not only a Dentist he is an oral physician. Dr Basil, after 30 years of practice, is an oral physician as he looks at more than just teeth and gums. He will assess other areas of health associated with the head and neck region.

Dr Basil is committed to professional development and staying abreast of new technology and he remains an active member of the Australian Dental Association (1988-present) where he also holds professional registration, and with the Dental Board of Australia (July 2010-present). He has had a long-term interest in the science behind root canal therapy and he has been a member of the Australian Society for Endodontology (1996-present).

An accomplished Dentist, he holds (and has held a number of) appointments

  • Member of the University of Queensland Dentistry E3 (Efficient Effective Endodontics) research group (2007-present).
  • Associate supervisor to students doing MPhil research projects since 2007 at the University of Queensland Dental School.

It was in 2004 that Dr Basil returned to university to complete a Master of Science in Dentistry (by Research) at the University of Western Australia. He graduated in 2007 after writing a thesis titled, An in vitro investigation into the antimicrobial activity of some endodontic medicaments and their base using agar diffusion, biofilm testing and medicament inactivation by dentine. During the study, he was supervised by Professor Paul Abbott (UWA) and Professor Laurence Walsh (UQ), who he would later work with to invent endodontic products that would help improve the outcomes in root canal therapy.

Dr Basil has received research grants to enable him to complete endodontic research projects and has published articles in the Australian Dental Journal, International Endodontic Journal and International Dentistry on this topic.

In 2008, Dr Basil completed additional orthodontic training and continues to do further orthodontic training today. Dr Basil was diagnosed with sleep disordered breathing and he completed several courses in this field from 2013 onwards and now screens his patients for this disorder and guides them to seek the best treatment possible. The importance of a functioning airway and its link to facial development, cognitive development and sleep is well documented. This is especially important in growing children so Dr Basil will examine tonsils, presence of a blocked nose/mouth breathing, constricted upper jaw and other signs. He will request X-rays and scans and refer his patients to Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists to ensure you breath without difficulty and to enhance your overall health and well-being.

Dr Basil has established relationships with specialist in many fields and will refer to Periodontist for gum problems, Oral Surgeon to extract impacted teeth, Endodontist for complex root canals, Oral Pathologist for an assessment on suspected oral/skin cancer, Sleep Physician for sleep study and sleep assessment and he will also keep their general doctor informed when required.

In 2015, Dr Basil was disappointed with all the treatments he had over the years to treat his acne that were all unsuccessful. So, he sought to resolve his own problematic skin condition through further study. He completed training through the Australiasian Dento-Facial Aesthetics (AADFA), and now he is qualified to advise patients about matters with skin health and facial aesthetics.
